With another plant planned, corn ethanol production in MS is expected to grow in 2023

Mato Grosso do Sul produced 3.2 billion liters of ethanol last year, a volume 33% higher than the previous crop year, with at least 685 million liters of this total being made from corn, according to a statement from the Secretariat of Environment, Development, Science, Technology and Innovation (Semadesc), based on data from the State Bioenergy Producers Association (Biosul).

According to Biosul data, in 2022, the start of corn ethanol production alone brought a 21% increase in the production of biofuel in the state, which until then only produced the input from sugarcane.

The outlook is for the biofuel made from the grain to increase its share as early as this year, with the start of operations at the Neomille plant in Maracaju.

Currently, only one plant is in operation, Inpasa, in Dourados. Last year, according to Semadesc, the company produced 318 million liters of hydrated ethanol and 367 million liters of anhydrous ethanol from corn.

In the view of Secretary Jaime Verruck, the expansion of corn ethanol is strategic for Mato Grosso do Sul and the segment still provides the production of other products, such as DDG. "We have one company operating and another that will be inaugurated this year, which puts the state on the national scenario of ethanol production," says Verruck.
